Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia
Who helps with a pet bird's aftercare around Dortmund
The Ruhr's climate is mild and damp, with grey winters and summers that now bring hotter spells than they used to. In warm weather, wrap your pet in a towel, put cool packs against the body and keep the room shaded and cool. In winter you usually have more time, but choosing between cremation, a pet cemetery or a garden burial within a day or two keeps things calm.
Dortmund has turned old industrial sites into green space, most famously the lake at Phoenix-See where a steelworks once stood, and the Westfalenpark and Rombergpark are close to many homes. In Germany, pet cremation and pet cemeteries are both well established. Burying a small pet in your own garden is sometimes possible, but rules depend on the local authority and water protection zones, so check with the city first.
Even in a metro the size of Dortmund, backyard hens are common in neighborhoods with yards. A hen that dies of old age is handled like any small pet. It's different when several birds die within days of each other: that's the moment to call a vet or the animal health authority before booking anything, because avian influenza rules may decide what happens next. City crematories will often ask about this on the phone.
Dortmund's population is around 588,000, the 3rd-largest of the 6 North Rhine-Westphalia communities we cover.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Essen (20 miles), Munster (32 miles) and Dusseldorf (36 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

How Germany thinks about cremation
Locally, 76.0%[1] of people choose cremation, so a written plan for someone's own funeral is a familiar idea to many families. The same habit suits parrot owners. A bird who may outlive you deserves a written plan: who takes them, which avian vet they see and what you'd like done when they die. Keep it with your own papers so it's found.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Germany figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Dortmund tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
How Dortmund's weather changes the first hours
Cremated remains aren't affected by weather, so there's no rush to scatter or bury them. Many bird keepers wait for a calm, dry day, sometimes the anniversary of the day their bird first came home.

How much to budget for a bird in Dortmund
Norway shows how wide European prices can be: one crematorium lists communal cremation from NOK 1,190 and separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for the lightest band, with NOK 1,790 extra for same-day return[5][6]. A bird needs no rush. Around Dortmund, ask for the standard return and spend the difference on a keepsake.

What the law says about a pet bird in North Rhine-Westphalia
Rules on burial and scattering in North Rhine-Westphalia were mostly written with larger animals and people in mind. For a bird, the practical points are simple: ask the landowner, keep away from water supplies and don't bury anything that might carry disease. The details for North Rhine-Westphalia follow.
In Germany, you may bury a pet bird on your own land with at least 50 cm of soil cover, outside water-protection areas. Pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation. Hobby poultry are generally expected to be registered with the local veterinary office (Veterinäramt), which is also the place to call if several birds die suddenly and bird flu (Geflügelpest) is possible.
Your next few days, in order
- If several backyard birds died suddenly, stop and call your vet or the animal health authority before moving or cremating them.
- Keep your bird cool. Bag them and put them in the refrigerator within an hour in warm weather.
- Call your avian vet; a general clinic nearby will do if the avian practice is a long drive. Either can confirm the death and keep your bird chilled.
- Ask your questions: will my bird be cremated alone, do you use a tray for tiny bodies, and how long until I get the remains?
- Decide who takes your bird there: yourself, the vet, or the provider's pickup service.
- Choose a container sized for grams, not pounds. A small keepsake urn, a locket or a glass vial is usually plenty.
Remembering your bird in Dortmund
Dortmund's pets live everywhere from the dense apartment streets around the Nordstadt to the miners' cottage settlements and semi-detached houses of the outer districts. If you live in an older block without a lift, or rely on the U-Bahn rather than a car, getting your pet to a vet or crematorium can be hard. Say which district you are in, which floor, and where a van could pull up; most regional providers will come to the door.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Germany?
For people, yes: about 76.0%[1] of Germany deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Dortmund follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Dortmund?
The closest communities we cover are Essen (about 20 miles), Munster (about 32 miles) and Dusseldorf (about 36 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Dortmund too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Are my hen's ashes safe to scatter if she had an illness?
Cremation reaches temperatures that leave only mineral remains, so the ashes themselves don't carry infection. The risk sits with the body before cremation, which is why a vet should advise after unexplained deaths in a flock. Once remains come back, you can scatter or bury them as you would any others, following local rules on land and water.
Is it safe to handle my bird's body?
Usually, with simple care. Wear gloves or wash your hands thoroughly, avoid shaking feathers near your face and keep other birds away from the body. Some infections, such as psittacosis, can pass from birds to people, so if several birds are ill, call your vet before handling them.
Can I bury my bird in my garden in North Rhine-Westphalia?
In most places, yes, if you own the property, dig deep enough to keep scavengers away and stay clear of wells and waterways. Renters usually need permission, and some towns have their own rules. Don't bury a bird suspected of an infectious disease until your vet agrees.
Can two bonded birds be cremated together?
Yes, if you ask. Many providers can cremate two birds in one private cremation, but the remains will be mixed. If you'd prefer separate containers, ask for separate cremations and clear labeling. Some families keep the first bird's remains and ask for the partner's to be added later.
