When your bird dies in Frankfurt: aftercare options

Frankfurt, Hesse

Pet birds in Frankfurt: the local picture

Frankfurt is one of Germany's warmer cities, and in July and August top-floor flats in the inner districts can stay hot through the night. If your pet dies then, move the body to a tiled floor or cellar storeroom, cover it with a towel over ice packs and aim to have it collected within a day. In the colder months you have more time, provided it is kept away from radiators.

Most people in Frankfurt live in rented apartments, from the Gründerzeit buildings of Nordend and Sachsenhausen to newer blocks in the outer districts, and many get around by U-Bahn or bike. A large pet that dies on the fourth floor of a building without a lift is a genuine logistical problem. Ask your vet or a pet cremation provider about home collection, and mention the stairs and parking so they send enough help.

Even in a metro the size of Frankfurt, backyard hens are common in neighborhoods with yards. A hen that dies of old age is handled like any small pet. It's different when several birds die within days of each other: that's the moment to call a vet or the animal health authority before booking anything, because avian influenza rules may decide what happens next. City crematories will often ask about this on the phone.

Frankfurt's population is around 764,000, the largest of the 2 Hesse communities we cover.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Wiesbaden (20 miles), Mainz (21 miles) and Mannheim (44 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

How Germany thinks about cremation

With roughly 76.0%[1] of people in Germany cremated, many families already have an urn on a shelf. Some choose to keep a bird's remains beside a relative's, or to have them placed in a grandparent's grave later where cemetery rules allow. It's worth asking the cemetery before promising anyone, since rules on adding pet remains differ widely.

The Germany percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Frankfurt, not as a count of pets.

Heat, cold and drafts in Frankfurt

Wherever you are, the first rule for a bird is simple: keep the body cool and bagged, away from food and from other birds. In warm weather that means the refrigerator within an hour or so; in cooler weather you have a little longer. Freeze only if you're sure you won't want a necropsy.

Bird cremation prices for Frankfurt keepers

Germany has roughly 120 pet cemeteries, and a grave costs about EUR 150 to 250[5], similar to an individual cremation. For a bird, some families near Frankfurt combine the two: cremate, then place the small container in a shared urn field. Ask the cemetery whether it takes urns from other providers.

The full price table by size is on our Hesse page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Before you dig or scatter in Hesse

Bird flu has changed what's expected of backyard keepers in Hesse. A single elderly hen is still your own business, but unexplained losses among several birds can trigger reporting duties, and officials may then choose how the carcasses are dealt with. Here's what to know before you bury or cremate.

In Germany, you may bury a pet bird on your own land with at least 50 cm of soil cover, outside water-protection areas. Pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation. Hobby poultry are generally expected to be registered with the local veterinary office (Veterinäramt), which is also the place to call if several birds die suddenly and bird flu (Geflügelpest) is possible.

A short plan for saying goodbye to your bird

  1. Write down what happened before the details fade: the last time your bird seemed normal, what was in their dish, and anything recently brought into the house, like a heater, a cleaning spray or a non-stick pan.
  2. Refrigerate your bird if there's any chance of a necropsy, sealed in a bag and kept apart from food.
  3. Phone your avian vet within a day or two to talk through whether a necropsy is worth it, especially if other birds share the home.
  4. Tell the vet in writing that you want a private cremation afterwards, so the lab releases your bird rather than disposing of them.
  5. Book the cremation and pass the lab's contact details to the provider, so the two can arrange pickup between them.
  6. Look after yourself and the flock. Keep routines steady, and watch the survivors' appetite for the next week.

Ideas for remembering a bird who talked, sang or simply watched

In Germany it is often permitted to bury a pet in your own garden, subject to local rules such as groundwater protection zones, but the majority of Frankfurt households rent without any garden, which makes cremation the usual route. Ask whether the quote is for an individual cremation, whether collection from home is included and how the ashes are returned. If your pet was registered with the city or an insurer, remember to let them know too.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Frankfurt?

Usually yes. Wiesbaden is about 20 miles away, Mainz is about 21 miles away and Mannheim is about 44 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

How do Germany attitudes to cremation compare?

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Germany human cremation rate at about 76.0%[1]. We show it on the Frankfurt page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Can I be present at my bird's cremation in Frankfurt?

Some crematories allow it, usually for an extra fee, and a few have a small viewing room. For a small bird, many families prefer a private goodbye at the clinic or at home before collection. If watching matters to you, ask when you book whether the chamber can be viewed and whether a separate room is available.

Is a necropsy worth it for my bird?

It's most worth it when other birds share your home or aviary. A necropsy can identify infections, toxins such as zinc or overheated non-stick fumes, and conditions that could affect the survivors. It has to happen before cremation, so talk to your avian vet within a day or two and keep your bird refrigerated meanwhile.

Can two bonded birds be cremated together?

Yes, if you ask. Many providers can cremate two birds in one private cremation, but the remains will be mixed. If you'd prefer separate containers, ask for separate cremations and clear labeling. Some families keep the first bird's remains and ask for the partner's to be added later.

What happens to my bird after a necropsy?

It depends on your instructions. Without them, labs often dispose of bodies with other lab remains. If you want a private cremation, tell your vet in writing before your bird leaves the clinic, and give the lab the crematory's details so they can release your bird for collection.
