Rules for pets after death are set locally, and for birds there's one extra layer: animal health rules for poultry and other birds kept outdoors. A lone budgie is simple. Several dead hens in a week is not, and a call to your vet or the animal health authority comes first. Here's what applies in Ontario.
In Canada, avian influenza in birds is a reportable disease, so if several backyard or aviary birds die suddenly, contact your vet or the Canadian Food Inspection Agency before moving them. For an indoor parrot or budgie, the vet is usually the first call. Winter matters too: across much of the country, frozen ground means many keepers cremate first and bury remains in spring.
Start with the Ontario rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat London's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
What to do when your bird dies in London
- Remove the bird from the aviary promptly and bag them, wearing gloves.
- Look for a pattern. Write down when it happened, which species, and whether the other birds show anything odd, like puffed-up feathers or loose droppings.

Will I have to travel to Hamilton to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Hamilton (roughly 72 miles from London) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from London?

In most places, yes, if you own the property, dig deep enough to keep scavengers away and stay clear of wells and waterways. Renters usually need permission, and some towns have their own rules. Don't bury a bird suspected of an infectious disease until your vet agrees.
